This paradisiac group of islands, with a preferred climate and constant temperature through all the year, and splendid beaches of fine sand, consists of 7 larger islands (Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Tenerife, La Palma, Gomera, Hierro) and a few smaller ones (Alegranza, Graciosa, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste und Lobos). Surprisingly, the landscape of each island is radically different to the others.
The Canary Islands have a year round mild climate which is very advantageous for a those who enjoy a bit of winter sun. The average temperature in the summer is around 24° (with daily highs reaching 30°-35°) and in the winter 18°.
Fuerteventura.
More than one hundred and fifty beaches, the most extensive coastal platform of the archipelago, with three thousand hours of sunshine a year and a naturallypeaceful environment are an invitation to visitors to enjoy Fuerteventura. Fuerteventura has 285 kilometres of coastline. Unlike the rest of the Islands, the shores are generally low-lying empty beaches. Perfect for any kind of water sports, or just strolling in the warm temperatures thanks to the fresh trade winds. Scarcely one hundred kilometres separate Fuerteventura, the second largest of the Canary Islands, from the coast of Africa. Those who know its history say that it is the oldest of them all. Fuerteventura, a sea of sand ´Los Llanos de la Concepción´. The windmills, dotted all over Fuerteventura, except in the area of Jandia, are faithful testimony to its farming tradition, and are now being restored as tourist centres with a view to recreating the landscape of their working past when Fuerteventura was known as the granary of the Canary Islands. This picture, among an album-full, is just one of Fuerteventura that will surprise you with its miles of golden sandy beaches washed by the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean. A total of 157 beaches are the best lure to Fuerteventura, where water sports lovers will find their paradise, and windsurfers in particular can take advantage of the constant coastal winds.
Lanzarotte.
Lanzarote is situated just 70 miles off the coast of Africa and is the most easterly of the Canary Islands. The island is 37 miles (60km) long and 12 miles (20 km) wide, making it the fourth largest island in the Canaries.
Lanzarote enjoys a mild dry climate with average daytime temperatures ranging from about 21°C in January to 29°C in August. Annual rainfall is just 140mm (5.5 inches). As
with the other Canary Islands, Lanzarote is
Volcanic in origin. Due to the recent eruptions
during the 18th and 19th Centuries, many parts
of Lanzarote appear to be from another world,
often described as 'lunar' or 'Martian', so
much so that parts of 'Planet of the Apes' were
shot here. The dry climate (and lack of erosion)
means that the Volcanic Landscape appears much
as it did just after the eruptions.
Lanzarote has a large variety of wonderful beaches.
From the beautiful white sands of the North
to the dark volcanic sands of Puerto Del Carmen,
one will be amazed by this contrast that is
unique to Lanzarote. The main beach in Puerto
Del Carmen is known as Playa Grande. This is
a long beach facing the busy resort. There are
numerous beaches in the area running from Arrecife
airport, Guacimeta, right through to the old
town of Puerto Del Carmen. Adjacent to the old
town lies a beautiful picturesque beach, Playa
Chica. This beach is host to a wide variety
of sporting activities. Here one can take diving
lessons, rent jet skis, go Parasailing or do
a touch of Snorkeling.
In the South
of the Island near the resort of Playa Blanca
lies the most beautiful beach of all, Papagaya.
This fantastic white beach is a must for beach
lovers and although nudist bathing is common
it is by no means compulsory. For those who
love surfing and Body Boarding the beaches of
Famara and La Santa, in the West, both present
fabulous opportunities. Famara is world famous
for its surf but would not be recommended to
the fainthearted. |
